Modulators & Fixed Frequency Shifters

Acousto-optic modulators are used to vary and control laser beam intensity. They can also be used as fixed frequency shifters due to fact that the diffracted order is frequency shifted by the amount of the carrier frequency.

Modulators

An Acousto Optic Modulator is intended to vary the intensity of the incoming laser beam. Also known as Amplitude Modulation (AM), it can be either digital (ON/OFF) or analog (sine, sawtooth, random…). The key parameter of a modulator is its rise/fall time, which defines the achievable « speed » of the modulation. The rise/fall time is directly proportional to the beam diameter inside the modulator.

Fixed Frequency Shifters

The Acousto Optic interaction inherently introduces a frequency shift in the diffracted order. The amount of the frequency shift equals to the injected carrier frequency and it can be upshifted or downshifted depending on the selected input Bragg angle. A Modulator shares the same properties as a Fixed Frequency Shifter.
